La. Supreme Court to Hear Appeal
February 22, 2008
The Louisiana Supreme Court has agreed to hear the appeal
of plaintiffs who
are seeking a preliminary injunction to halt the 2006 merger of Newcomb and
Tulane Colleges. The plaintiffs, putative heirs of Mrs. Newcomb, argue
that Newcomb's will prevents Tulane from merging the Newcomb and Tulane Colleges
and creating the Sophie Newcomb Memorial College Institute. All three
courts that have considered challenges to these changes have upheld them,
finding that Mrs. Newcomb placed no conditions on her bequest. The
Institute has been pursuing excellence in women's education for over two
years, and has provided high quality programming to thousands of women with
superb results.
